WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 10, 2010
Since its official start in June 2009, the Presto project[1] has made considerable progress. Today, the publication of the ETRA Policy Guide on electric bicycles marks another important step.

Presto consists of 3 main pillars: cycling infrastructure, cycling promotion and electric bicycles. Today, the consortium has completed a policy guide for each of these pillars. These guides are aimed at supporting the PRESTO cities in their cycling policy activities and at serving as European reference guides for all those who are interested in the subjects concerned. The guides will be published on the PRESTO website (www.presto-cycling.eu) very soon.

The European Twowheel Retailers’ Association (ETRA) is in the consortium responsible for the pillar electric bicycles. Consequently, the European trade association has written the Policy Guide on Electric Bicycles. In anticipation of its publication on the PRESTO and ETRA website, the guide can be downloaded from the link below.

The Guide serves as basic material for the training programme, which is an integral part of PRESTO. The objective of the electric bicycle training is to raise awareness on electric bicycles, to stimulate and facilitate market penetration and to promote the use of electric bicycles. Key issues are potential user groups, the market, opportunities and the vehicle itself. The training is aimed at bicycle dealers, distributors, civil servants in local administrations, NGO staff, ... anybody who may have an interest in electric bicycles.

The first training session will take place on 26 and 27 February 2009 in Tczew (PL). The electric bicycle training is scheduled for Saturday 27 February from 12.45 till 3.15 p.m. The agenda and registration form are published on the PRESTO website: http://www.presto-cycling.eu/en/about-presto/how-can-you-benefit-from-it. (Please note that the schedule for the electric bike training in the agenda needs to be corrected.) The number of seats available is limited and registrations will be dealt with on a “first-come, first-served” basis.

[1] PRESTO is a project to promote cycling in Europe - In some European cities, cycling is already a significant transport mode, but cycling still has a huge potential that has yet to be activated. PRESTO will remove likely barriers and help to develop a real cycling culture in European cities. Five European cities – Bremen (Germany), Grenoble (France), Tczew (Poland), Venice (Italy) and Zagreb (Croatia), with varying levels of cycling mode share – provide an ideal arena to address the undeveloped potentials of cycling. PRESTO activities in these cities focus on improved infrastructure planning and targeted promotion to encourage the use of bicycles (including pedelecs). Presto is co-financed by Intelligent Energy Europe and sponsored by Accell, Giant, Sram and Ultra Motor.
